How Much Room Do You Need for a Pool Table?

The most common mistake we see is buying a pool table that fits the room but not the game. You need the table plus enough space on every side to pull the cue back and take a shot. Here's how to check before you buy.

Recommended minimum room sizes

These sizes assume standard 58" cues and about 5 feet of cue space around the table:

Table size Minimum room size
7-foot table about 13' x 16'
8-foot table about 13.5' x 17'
9-foot table about 14' x 18'

Exact measurements vary by model, so always check the playing surface and outside dimensions on the product page.

How to measure your room

  1. Measure wall to wall in both directions, at the narrowest point.
  2. Subtract anything that sticks out: posts, fireplaces, bars, radiators, couches you don't plan to move.
  3. Mark the table's footprint on the floor with painter's tape, then stand at each side and pretend to shoot. If you hit a wall, the room is too tight.

Room a little short?

  • Shorter cues help. Keeping a 52" or 48" cue on hand makes tight shots near a wall much easier.
  • Go one size down. A 7-foot table is great for family play and still feels like a real game.
  • Think about the whole room. Leave a walkway and a spot for a cue rack and a few chairs.

Don't forget the path in

Slate tables arrive in several heavy pieces and are assembled in the room. Check stairs, tight turns and doorways on the way to your game room before delivery day.
