Round vs. Oval Poker Table: Which Shape Is Right for You?

Round black poker table in a bright living room

One of the first choices when you buy a poker table is the shape. Round and oval tables both work great at home, but they fit different rooms and different games. Here is how to choose.

Round poker tables

  • Players: usually 6 to 8.
  • Size: about 48 to 60 inches across.
  • Best for: smaller rooms, dining rooms and casual games with friends. Everyone can reach the middle of the table easily.
  • Bonus: many round tables have a dining top, so the table can be used every day.

Examples: the BBO Ginza (55 inches, LED lights, seats 8) and the RAM Prohibition 60" Round Poker Table.

Oval poker tables

  • Players: usually 8 to 10.
  • Size: about 84 to 96 inches long.
  • Best for: bigger home games, tournaments and dedicated game rooms. It looks like the tables you see on TV.

Examples: the BBO Stratton, the BBO Elite Alpha and the BBO Aces Pro folding table.

How much room do you need?

Plan for about 3 feet of space behind each chair. A round 55-inch table fits in a room of about 11 x 11 feet. A 92 to 96-inch oval table needs about 15 x 11 feet.
