How Long a Room Do You Need for a Shuffleboard Table?

A shuffleboard table is one of the best games for a group: easy to learn, fun for all ages and perfect for long, narrow rooms. The key question is length.

The rule of thumb

Take the table length and add at least 2 feet at each end so players can stand and shoot. Three feet at each end is more comfortable. Also leave about 3 feet along each side for people to walk and watch.

Table length Minimum room length
9' table about 13'
12' table about 16'
14' table about 18'
16' table about 20'
22' table about 26'

Which length is right for you?

  • 9' to 12': great for family rooms, basements and smaller spaces. Easier for kids.
  • 14' to 16': a popular middle ground that feels like the real thing in a typical basement or bonus room.
  • 18' to 22': tournament-style play for large rooms, garages and dedicated game rooms.

Good spots for a shuffleboard

  • Long basements
  • Garage conversions
  • Bonus rooms and wide hallways
  • Along one wall of a larger game room, next to a pool table

A few more tips

  • Lighting: light the full length of the table evenly so there are no dark spots at the ends.
  • Delivery: long tables ship in large boxes. Measure stairs, turns and doorways on the way in.
  • Accessories: you'll want pucks (weights) and shuffleboard wax, which keeps the pucks gliding.
